Want To Be Rich and Successful — Overcome These Mental Barriers First
Of course, saying the above is easy. But despite the clear benefit of the above strategy, a lot of people will find it difficult to have a sidelines job. The difficulty is not because of time, energy, or money constraints. The difficulty is in their heads, me included. It is because of this unsaid accepted norm in our society, that working professionals are not supposed to have part-time jobs. Today, many still cling to this belief that it is a major taboo. Many professionals still hang on to the notion that it is unprofessional to have a part-time venture on the sidelines. Why? “Because part-time jobs are for lowly paid workers only”, some may claim, even as they are secretly wishing that they could reap the multiple benefits of having a sideline income.

Also, a great many folks believe that they must devote themselves to their employers. They must not only work hard but must dedicate their time and effort just to their employer. To do otherwise would be a sin, in their eyes. While I have no problem with working hard and devoting time and effort to my employer, I also believe that to do so exclusively and blindly, would not be the wisest thing to do.
I can tell you that all the above are craps. They are myths drilled into our heads by shorted-sighted employers (and they have done it successfully), misguided colleagues, and outdated beliefs. Their day is gone now. They have long passed the sell date and should now join the wilderness of bygone myth. The faster you realize this, the better.
What is unprofessional about having another source of income to feed your family? What is unprofessional about having another avenue to channel your talents, energy, and expertise? What is so wrong with escaping from the mental and physical discomfort of a full-time job?
Here are some ways to jump-start your journey to financial freedom.

Let’s explore the above a bit further. Are your employers using you to the best of your abilities? Do you have to dig deep and long and use all your talents to perform your job? The answer usually is a big resounding NO. Often, all that is needed is just a small percentage of your talents and efforts. While this may be good because you do not have to go full throttle 12 hours a day, it also means that the bulk of your talent and ability lies untapped and remain dormant. In other words, there’s a sleeping giant in each and every one of us. And if left long enough, it will remain there until it’s time to meet our Maker. When we die, it dies. This is a tragic waste, don’t you think so.
Employer use but about 20–30 % of our talent and ability. So, at least 70% of the world’s talent is not being utilized in any way, left dormant, left abandoned. I think you will agree with me that the world is missing out big time in allowing all these talents to remain hidden and untapped. And to allow it to continue would be an even bigger sin.
Moreover, having total and blind faith in your employer in this day and age is taking it too far. Do remember that the keywords in business today are downsizing, right-sizing, retrenchment, mergers and acquisitions, and voluntary separation schemes, and none of these are good news for the employees. The reality is, as long as you are not an owner, you are expendable, whatever your contribution. whatever your position and how long you’ve been around.

For those who have a steady and comfortable job, you may find this hard to believe. With the globalization of the world economy and the information technology revolution, these 2 forces will cause major changes in the way we work and the way we conduct business. More and more companies are reverting to employing part-timers or freelancers and this is a crushing blow for full-time employees and those seeking full employment. This is the real world we are in now.
Let’s not be disheartened by this. More, than 80% of new businesses in US and most parts of the world, began as part-time ventures. They started as second jobs or something done on the sidelines. To name just 3 of them ( the famous 3) Microsoft, Dell Computer, and Oracle, coincidentally also 3 of the biggest and brightest companies in the US and the world. That’s the real world, my friends.
It’s no secret that Bill Gates started Microsoft when he was a student at Harvard. But not many people know that Dell Computers also had a similar story. Just like Bill gates, Michael Dell started building and selling computers when he was still in university. He had to drop out because the big money from fixing and selling computers was getting in the way of his studies. Dell’s parents were not the believer’s in the beginning, Dell had to persist in his efforts and finally managed to win them over.
Still, viewing this side venture thing with weary eyes? Ok, let’s look at Larry Ellison. At one time, he was trying to take over from Bill Gates as the richest man on the planet. His company, Oracle, began as a side venture when he was still an employee for another company. As you can see, these corporations are now worth tens of billions, and the founders of these companies are now multi-billionaires.
Here is a way to overcome all barriers and reach financial freedom
Furthermore, due to current changing and unfavorable economic conditions, almost half of the workforce is having a side venture. And futurists are predicting that eventually three-quarters of the workforce will follow suit and most of them will be embracing it with open arms.
So, take away the mental barriers, make a decision to take control of your lives, do things that matter most to you, to be able to spend time doing things that are important to you, and most of all, to make your lives worth living.
That’s all for now, friends. See you all in my next article.
