Becoming Wealthy Is A Team Sport

Becoming Wealthy Is A Team Sport

We all have seen how individualism is of prime importance in school. Firstly, we are graded based on individual effort. And although there are areas where teamwork is important — in sports like football and hockey, it is still the individual effort that counts. The smartest student rule. He is the man on the campus, loved by teachers and students alike. Which is tragic because it teaches us that life works the same way. That individualism is all that matters. Nothing could be further than the truth. In real life, no one gets to do anything great or achieve anything worthwhile alone. No one get to make it big by doing it all on his own. Archimedes was wrong — it takes more than one man and a lever to move the world.

And even in individual sports like tennis and golf, there is a team involved. Sure it is players like Tiger Wood or Roger Federer who are the front man. But even these talented players have trainers and coaches guiding them behind the scene. Take away these people and it would be a good bet that the winning streak will soon end.

Even movie stars have acting, speech, and dance coaches. This is not counting the agents, accountants, lawyers, and a whole lot of other support people scrambling in the background.

What I am saying here is, you need to have a team to do and achieve anything worthwhile. And this includes building wealth. Becoming wealthy is perhaps the ultimate team sport. You cannot do it on your own and you cannot do it alone. And although it is true that individual effort can take you somewhere, if you want to become seriously rich, you have to develop a team. If nothing else, simply because you do not have the time, knowledge, or expertise to know it all or do it all.

I know that it is not easy to let go because I too had to learn the hard way. Basically, everything good that I achieved in school was due to my own efforts. I studies English, read history, and memorized the multiplication tables on my own. So, just like every other student, I too thought that all that was needed to make it big in life was to be the best that I can be. And the world will soon come knocking on my door. I was wrong.

Older and wiser, I now know that I needed help along the way. And ever since I accepted this fact, I have made progress in my life. Some of the people on my team include accountants, tax advisers, and lawyers. Most of them are my old schoolmates. Before I take any step that involves money, especially those that involve lots of money, I consult these experts first to get their views and opinions. Of course, this does not mean that I follow their advice blindly. In the end, it is still my money and I am the one responsible for it.

Of course, some of these cost money but if you want to go far, there is always a price to be paid. You can travel to New York in the economy, business, or first class. You may arrive at the destination, at the same time but there is a world of difference between the three classes. Anyone who has sat in first class will not want to travel any other way. Whatever the money the airline is charging, most will gladly pay the premium. These people have learned that quality costs money. if you want quality, you have to pay for it. There is no other way.

There is no such thing as a free lunch — never ever forget that. And if you keep saying that you cannot afford to pay for classes, for seminars, or invest in books and programs because you do not have the money or do not want to invest in them, it is a pretty good bet that you will never have the big money. So let’s hear it one more time — no one is going to give you quality service for free.

That’s all for now, my friends. See you all in my next article.
